Installing Domino 8x on windows server 2003 x64 and the invisible set-up wizard!

I had to install Domino on Winders server 2003 64 bit edition last week.  Now first off I tried installing the 32 bit edition of Domino 8.0 because I had that to hand.

The install ran fine but on trying to start the server for the first time, expecting to get the set-up wizard, I got nothing.  A quick look at processes confirmed that serversetup.exe was running but just not visible.  This has apparently blighted other people with one work around being to run nserver -silent and use the Administration client remote install tool.

After a bit of messing around and one server re-image later ( for other reasons aside from the install) I ended up installing Domino 8.0.1 - but same problem!

I'm not sure why but, trying 'nserver -playback' from the command line seemed like a punt even if logic suggested that this shouldn't work [ I thought playback was intended for running previously saved server set-up profiles - which it is].

Usefully though the nserver -playback option gives you an option to run a 'new' profile - which neatly pops you into the normal set-up wizard and away you go.  I'm not sure if that is the intended functionality ... but it worked.

Now I've no idea if this is confined to x64 windows, I'm just glad the work around wasn't too timing consuming.

I'm surprised this didn't make the news more (maybe nobody cares that much) but they are finally getting the daftness of 4 day bank transfers sorted out here in the UK.

So for this week some bank transfer at some banks will be faster - with more being rolled out as the year goes on.  This article has some more detail and links to site that tell you more ..  but I think individual banks will be informing customers as it goes live.

Weekend sailing trip..

Was away sailing at the weekend (see route below).  Now I haven't done a lot of sailing but enough to enjoy it (and not be too sea sick).

The stretch from Lochranza back east was quite bumpy.  The boat is almost 6 tons and it was almost completely out of the water on the back of a 4-5 feet swell - not much but it makes you appreciate just how powerful the sea is.

For a Scottish weekend it was superb weather (ie a bit warm and didn't rain) and Lochranza is a stunning location - well worth a visit ( you can get there by ferry and car).

Check your JSON

If you've ever done any work with JSON then you'll know you can get cross eyed reading through the file.

This checker from Colin Ramsay is a quick easy way of making sure the format its right.

But it doesn't tell you exactly whats wrong.  A quick google on JSON editors turns up a good few results

But nothing so far with syntax highlighting that will pin-point syntax errors - any suggestions people?

Update: fixed the links that were missing.

So why bother with OOXML .. ?

Just got sent this  Microsoft's backward route to ODF

So why are they bothering with OOXML again?  I had read it was because some customers really have a demand to only use ISO ratified standards for document storage.  That sounds fair enough, but it sounds like egos got in the way forcing the whole "we'd better bring out our own standard then" and didn't really consider the work involved.

It seems like it might be a lot of wasted effort now, and if ODF support is so forth coming it will certainly be a lot easier for people to use ODF with <your office suite of choice> knowing that MS Office users can work in that to.

All sound like its heading in the right direction .

Moving on..

Well for those that know me this won't be news - but I've left my permanent employment to rely fully on my own business!  The business prospects look good enough for me to work full-time so its exciting, scary and nerve racking all at the same time.  After almost 6 years of a guaranteed income its going to be a bit of a change - but a great one I think.

We will be selling some of our own solutions, doing asp .Net development and we are talking to people about providing email solutions (Notes & Domino of course).  Although there is no obvious need right now I'm determined to keep my hand in with Domino development - I've a few ideas up my sleeve on that front as well.  (I don't want this blog to become a big advert for the business so I'll leave it at that for now)

So its going to be a real mixed bag and I hope a whole lot of fun.  And I'll have more time for blogging ... I think

Welcome ..
