Just got sent this  Microsoft's backward route to ODF

So why are they bothering with OOXML again?  I had read it was because some customers really have a demand to only use ISO ratified standards for document storage.  That sounds fair enough, but it sounds like egos got in the way forcing the whole "we'd better bring out our own standard then" and didn't really consider the work involved.

It seems like it might be a lot of wasted effort now, and if ODF support is so forth coming it will certainly be a lot easier for people to use ODF with <your office suite of choice> knowing that MS Office users can work in that to.

All sound like its heading in the right direction .

Gravatar Image1 - The reason OOXML isn't dead with this announcement is that ODF does not map every feature in Office, where as OOXML is designed to do that. It might not matter for most of us .. but really complex spreadsheets will lose stuff once they are saved to ODF. Same thing for the really fancy presentation stuff in PPT.

Don't get me wrong, I love this announcement. Heck I was the customer quote in it ... but ODF has a long way to go before the need for OOXML goes away.

Gravatar Image2 - I'm certainly no office power user (well, not often) so forget about these things. Thanks for the feedback.
