Got a new version of Teamstudios Build Manager toady (version 3.0.17).  A quick skim through the various options suggests no major changes.  One change of note though is the option for admins to load a pre-defined set of servers.

This means that anyone creating a promotion path can only set the promotion to be one of these servers.  Then to go a step further, the admin can specify a 'promote authority' group .. therefore restricting the promotion of databases to this server to the specified group.  A feature I'm sure admins will like.  It also means though, that I can 'pick' a server - rather than having to type in server names: so simple, yet so handy .

So when I pick a server for a promotion path it automatically sets the promote authority - which is nice, but also means that anyone who can promote to that server can promote my database now!  Previously I could restrict who had promotion rights at a database level

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like one new feature in, and part of a feature out.   Ach well, great to see improvements are still coming.

Gravatar Image1 - The idea behind that is that there would be 'special' servers that only admins can promote to. This will allow developers to create the promotion path, but not allow them to actually use the promotion path. The old way of providing the authority list still exists if you leave the field blank on the 'Stored Server' definition.

Gravatar Image2 - Yes, totally agree - and given that a 'disabled' server doesn't appear as an option to promote to means that the list of servers we now have as promotion options is suitably restricted.

And there will be 'admin' only servers - thats great.

One problem is that build manager would probably live on a 'dev' server - to which developers have a large amount of access - meaning that 'promote authority groups' could be bypassed.

I guess you'll say that the dev environment shouldn't be that open

thanks for the feedback. Scott

(and I don't live on this blog - timing was just lucky )
